Teaching Philosophy

Sound Designers are artists. We are all students, and we are simply at different levels of skill and experience. The pillars of mastering your art are to study, practice, and share. So let’s do that. I share practical and theoretical knowledge, and encourage further personal study, and at the same time we practice what we learn. We use the gear, experiment with it, understand why and how it works, and how to manipulate it in an artful way. We collaborate with the other theatre artists and designers in order to tell the same story that everyone else is telling. We practice expressing ourselves in the Aural realm. We create sound effects, and create the system to deliver those effects to the audience. We assemble the Sound System, from microphone to speakers ourselves so that we gain a good understanding of the signal path. We troubleshoot, and more. These are the disciplines of our art. We never stop learning, even when we’ve completed the class. When we stop learning, we stop growing and we stop living
