Teaching Philosophy

I whole-heartily love to push students into investigation and hands-on learning. “Here’s some paint; here’s a canvas. Go. Ask me questions.” I believe this philosophy applies well to a life lived in making theatre, because making something out of nothing is a gift from the Universe.

I guide my students. I support their choices. I encourage them to work with one another. I am a resource. That’s where I stand. I encourage, want, and let my students make mistakes. I want those young sprouts to have an active and participatory role in their learning. This is a complete de-emphasis on “teacher instruction” mainly because I want to learn with them, because along the way I might learn something new. My classroom, my “environment” is purposely bohemian. My hope is that my students develop independence, a hunger for exploration, and never accept “that’s the way it is,” as an answer.
