*Zani (Zanni, Zane, plural Zanies) Origin: commedia dell'arte.
A character that is a surprisingly clever servant and trickster. Zanies advance the action while giving it some movement with a slight twist. They give life to inanimate objects and sense a spirit in everything. Zanies have the ability to make the impossible possible.
