PCPA Theaterfest presents

Shakespeare’s comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona plays in PCPA’s Marian Theatre July 15 - 30, then in the Solvang Festival Theater August 5 - 21. Set in the 1920s, this story of love and friendship is centered around Proteus (Evans Eden Jarnefeldt) and Valentine (Tobias Shaw). Proteus adores Julia (Stephanie Philo) but while in Milan falls in love with Sylvia (Megan C.C. Walker) the Duke’s daughter, who has also caught the eye of Valentine. It’s a love triangle with a twist, disguises, and a pair of prattling servants; Speed (Paul Culos), and Launce (Leo Cortez) who provide the non-stop comic relief. Also cast are Peter S. Hadres as Duke of Milano and Antonio, and Kitty Balay as Lucetta, Host, and Pathino. Director Roger DeLaurier said he relishes the servants in this play who are perhaps the best clowns Shakespeare ever wrote. Specifically, “Speed with his great wit and love of wordplay and Launce with his great heart and devotion to his master and mostly to his dog, Crab.” Pulling from the romantic Cole Porter era of the 20s with a backdrop of the European jazz age in Italy, PCPA’s production embodies the smooth cool debonair swash of polished youthful masculinity as Shakespeare’s lines present some of the most honest explorations of male friendship ever written. Director Roger DeLaurier believes that this time period also blends the poetic sensibilities of Shakespeare’s language with a more contemporary style, giving the speakers a voice from our world rather than echoes from a distant era. The show’s designers include: Dave Nofsinger (scenery), Juliane Starks (costumes), Tamar Geist (lights), and Walter TJ Clissen (sound). The Stage Manager is Sabrina Matlock.
