PCPA Theaterfest
presents
InterPlay: The Stage Between
Now in its eight year, InterPlay: The Stage Between continues PCPA’s commitment to presenting new works in a play reading format. Playing in the Severson Theatre from March 12th through the 21st audiences will experience two exciting plays; Shipwrecked: An Entertainment! The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told By Himself) by Donald Marguiles and Tender by Nicki Bloom.

Eight performances only!
Shipwrecked plays 3/12 at 7pm, 3/13 at 7pm, 3/20 at 2pm, and 3/21 at 2pm.
Tender plays 3/13 at 2pm, 3/14 at 2pm, 3/19 at 7pm, and 3/20 at 7pm.
(Plays contain mature language/themes.)

Shipwrecked, by Donald Marguiles is a fantastical and joyous romp. It’s based on Louis De Rougemont (1847 – 1921), a would-be explorer who claimed to have had adventures in Australasia. Born Henri Louis Grin in 1847 Switzerland, “De Rougemont” tantalized, puzzled, and charmed the scientific and cultural communities of Europe. Was it the truth or a brilliant fable? Come join the InterPlay cast as we explore the possibilities.

"[Shipwrecked] allows us to dwell for a while in a world we'd never otherwise visit – ‘dabbing a little spot of color on the drab canvas of life,’ as Louis puts it -- and Margulies makes a convincing case that those who self-righteously tear down our tall-tale tellers do us no favors.." —Variety

Shipwrecked features Resident Artist Peter S. Hadres* in the role of Louis de Rougemont, as well as, PCPA Faculty Josh Machamer, and Conservatory Students TJ Bruyere, Melissa Davis, Danielle Durbin, and Carissa Gatti.

Tender, by Nicki Bloom won major theatrical awards for the first time playwright throughout its premieres in Australia. This complex contemporary piece explores the unexplained absence of a passionately loved husband and son, by a wife and her parents-in-law, who experience grief in three different ways. The play moves freely between past and present, between the imagined and real -- searching for the nature of intense love among those who continue to live and those who are present only in memory.

"Tender is an emotional revelation, wherein the narrative is, ultimately, incidental to its thorough and gentle expositions of the nature, and character, of love, loss, grief, memory, resilience & relationships.'" —Sydney Stage Online

Tender features Resident Artists Karin Hendricks and Evans Eden Jarnefeldt, Guest Artists Kerry Ann Mayling and John Battalino, and Conservatory Student Edgar de la Cruz.

Special ticket pricing. $16.00 for one reading; $12.00 for the second reading.

Curtains
Book by Rupert Holmes, Music by John Kander, and Lyrics by Fred Ebb
April 15 – May 9, 2010 – Marian Theatre
June 17 – July 3, 2010 – Festival Theater, Solvang
In this hilarious collision of the traditions of Agatha Christie and 42nd Street, Kander and Ebb’s Tony-winning musical celebrates the backstage “whodunnit.” It’s a toe tapping, gun slinging, wise cracking cavalcade in which Boston Detective Lt. Frank Cioffi has to drag his net to catch the killer among the stars, and soon finds himself happily caught up in love, and in a musical headed for Broadway.
(Recommended for Family Entertainment)

Sylvia
By A.R. Gurney
June 24 – July 3, 2010 – Marian Theater
July 9 - 25, 2010 – Festival Theater
Our title character is the bone of contention between Greg and his wife Kate in this howlingly funny domestic comedy. This summer we’ll unleash this hilarious and touching tale that takes the term “animal lover” to a whole other level.

West Side Story
Book by Arthur Laurents, Music by Leonard Bernstein, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
July 9 – 25, 2010 – Marian Theatre
July 30 – Aug. 22, 2010 – Festival Theater
In this triumphant legend, love transcends language, time and place. While Manhattan’s west side rumbles with the clash of Jets and Sharks, Maria and Tony seek “a somewhere” their romance can thrive. In their revolutionary work that changed the course of the American musical, Bernstein, Sondheim and Laurents bring their award winning genius to the immortal story of star-crossed lovers caught in a turf war of rival ethnic gangs.

Songs For A New World
Music and Lyrics by Jason Robert Brown
Aug. 6 - 21, 2010 – Marian Theatre
Aug. 27 – Sept. 12, 2010 – Festival Theater
It’s all about the music in this gorgeous song cycle from Jason Robert Brown, one of the rising voices of the musical theater. Each song transports us through different stories, humorous and moving, of our American identity and experience – our community and isolation, our desire for the immaterial in a material world, and the moments of decision that define our journey. With a magic that only great music can provide, these Songs sweep us away into the moments we stand our ground, break our silence, make a bargain and find our way home.

Invierno – World Premiere
By José  Cruz González
Aug. 27 – Sept. 19, 2010 – Severson Theatre
We conclude our season with a newly commissioned work from José Cruz González, the author of The Heart’s Desire, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and set in 19th century rancho California. Our story begins sadly – with love turned to obsession and destruction wrought by jealousy – the state is imperiled, friendships fractured and families torn apart. But it ends gracefully, with the healing that comes with the passage of time and awakened faith.
