PCPA Theaterfest Presents

Curtains
The Murder-Mystery-Musical-Comedy is moving to Solvang

"The most fun I've had at the theater in a long, long time.
Curtains is so good, you will feel a need to see it again and again."
-Santa Maria Times

In a collision of theatrical traditions – Agatha Christie meets 42nd StreetCurtains is a backstage whodunit with a clever and contagiously catchy toe-tapping score. PCPA’s production of John Kander and Fred Ebb’s Tony-winning musical plays June 17 – July 3 in the Solvang Festival Theater.

Set in 1946 Boston, the cast and crew of a Broadway-bound musical all become suspects after someone is murdered on stage. Detective Frank Cioffi is called in to solve the murder. While investigating, Cioffi finds himself in the middle of theatrical egos and eccentricities, deceit, and a budding love affair. A huge fan of musical theatre himself, Cioffi even has some suggestions on how to improve Robin’ Hood! A New Musical of the Old West.

PCPA’s production of Curtains is directed Roger DeLaurier with musical direction by Callum Morris, choreography by Michael Jenkinson, scenic design by DeAnne Kennedy, costumes by Fredrick P. Deeben, lights by Tamar Geist, sound design by Matt Carpenter and the Production Stage Manager is Christine Collins.

"Whatever you do, don't let the curtain go down on Curtains without seeing it!
You'll have so much fun and laugh so hard it'll kill you!
-Santa Maria Sun

Curtains is based on an original concept by Peter Stone. Stone, however, died in 2003 before it was completed and Rupert Holmes (one-time pop song writer and Tony-winning playwright-Drood) was hired to rewrite the book. The show premiered July 25, 2006 at the Ahmanson Theatre, Los Angeles. It transferred to Broadway in March 2007 and was nominated for eight Tony-Awards. The cast included David Hyde Pierce who won the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. Also in the Broadway cast was former PCPA Actor and veteran Broadway talent, Michael X Martin.

Curtains authors John Kander (composer) and Fred Ebb (lyricist) were among the longest running music and lyrics partnerships in Broadway musical history; along with Rogers and Hart/Hammerstein. Among their award winning works are Cabaret, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Ebb passed away at 71 before Curtains transferred to Broadway, ending a very successful and decades-long affiliation.

"Directed by Roger DeLaurier, [Curtains]
showcases some of the company's finest song, dance and comic talent,
as well as a skilled, high-energy dance ensemble."
- The Tribune

Meet the characters

Andrew Philpot* as
Lieutenant Frank Cioffi

Local Boston detective who is also a musical theatre aficionado. Aside from being exceptionally good at his job, he has also aspired to be a musical theatre performer his entire life. He falls in love with Niki.

Karin Hendricks* as
Niki Harris

Niki is a chorus girl/understudy in the chorus of the Robin' Hood! A New Musical of the Old West during its Boston tryout. She aspires to make it as a performer on Broadway. She meets and falls in love with Lt. Frank Cioffi who is investigating a murder at the theatre.

Melinda Parrett* as
Georgia Hendricks

The female half of our songwriting team. She ends up taking on the leading lady role after the leading lady dies on stage.

Kitty Balay* as
Carmen Bernstein

The brassy Broadway producer. Sidney is her philandering husband.

Michael Jenkinson* as
Aaron Fox

The composer of Robin' Hood! A New Musical of the Old West. His songwriting partner, Georgia, is also his wife from whom he is separated.

Evans Eden Jarnefeldt as

Erik Stein* as
Christopher Belling

The flamboyant English Director who suggests Georgia take over the lead; and once again passes over the understudy, Bambi.

Natasha Harris as
Bambi Bernet

Performer in the chorus and the daughter of Carmen, the lead producer. She's hungry to work her way up to the leading performer. Many think she was only hired because of her mother.

The general manager. Agreeable if slightly gruff. He's a big-wig in the garment industry and is a first-time investor in Robin' Hood. He doesn't understand theatre people.

Rhett Guter as
Bobby Pepper

The choreographer, lead dancer and leading man. The true bright star in the cast.

Mara Lefler as
Jessica Cranshaw

Fading Hollywood star, a diva who has no right to be one. She's a triple threat; she can't sing, can't dance, can't act.
